Comic #123 “Falling Walls”
Hello from a snowy Monday in Baltimore, it’s the latest and greatest Dead of Summer, comin’ atcha.
First things first, a special thanks to you dear readers. Thanks to you, we’ve broken 40,000 hits. That’s insane to me, and you have no clue how appreciated that is. Onward and upward, and we’re very happy to have you along for the ride.
Secondly…as you may know, Pan’s Labyrinth hit theatres this past weekend. A film particularly being looked forward to at the DoS HQ, we’ve been waiting for it’s arrival, and finally, the wide release hit, meaning we in lowly Baltimore could check it out. I unfortunately have not had the pleasure to see it…but with his thoughts, Mr. Ghostfreehood himself, Nick Borkowicz. Take it away, Nick!
Having never seen Chronos or Mimic, I am a bigger fan of Guirellmo Del Toro then I should be.
I thought he did a great job with Hellboy and I love the Blade films he’s done. However, I’ve never seen a film that he has done on his own accord. Having only read reviews of Devil’s Backbone, I had no idea what to truly expect from Pan’s Labyrinth.
Patiently awaiting the film since I heard the my first buzz about it on Ain’t It Cool News,
it was certainly not what what I expected but only better.
I’ve heard quite a few people say the scenes of the fantasy world were too short. Of course like those, I would have loved for them to be much longer. Being what they were in retrospect, it only made the experience much more enjoyable because it seems Del Toro wants you to stay grounded in reality. Recalling the sequences of Ofelia and her fantasy companions, it’s as if they were dreams of my own. Only remembering bits and pieces but feeling completely blanketed by the experience. Waking up in the morning you can relate.
The actor of Pan and the Pale Man, Doug Jones does an amazing performance on screen. There were moments where his translation of the characters had me filled with sheer joy, chills and even made me wonder if you could truthfully trust his character.of Pan. The Pale Man was creepy and delightfully strange. He could have me over for dinner anytime. I am absolutley struck by the wonder and tragedy of this film. It leaves me now to only wait once again, this time for the dvd.
Definately sounds like a flick worth checking out. And if that wasn’t enough, Nick was so inspired to do a special Pan’s Labyrinth pin up, clickable below. How he cranks out stuff this good, I may never understand…but enjoy!
See you Wednesday!
