Back to wrap up the week, with another SPINE-TINGLING installment of Dead of Summer.
Yeah, silly adjective, but it always brings to mind the rad 50’s horror comics, like Tales from the Crypt and such.
Over the course of the ultra-busy anniversary celebration weekend, and the recovery this week, I realized, I forgot to discuss something on this here interweb site!
So allow me if you will, to throw the internet wayback machine to one week ago…the release of a film. Or films, if you will. the release of…
er…
that’s not it…
THE RELEASE OF…
Yeah! That’s it! GRINDHOUSE!
What an amazing theatrical experience. Two over the top, absolutely insane shlockfests, mixed with the unique experience brought with the faux trailers, 70’s style logos, old-school rating indications, and even some fake restaurant ads. From the fake trailer for Machete, to the zombie-poppin’ action of Planet Terror, and the nail biting chases of Death Proof, my eyes were glued to the screen, as my butt molded to the theater chair for just a hair over 3 hours.
What was even better, was the audience we were lucky to see it with seemed to be as into the concept of the movie as the directors themselves, having a laugh at the cheesy dialogue, fake ads, and generally treating the screening as a mini film festival.
Nick and I went to see it Friday with a rather large group of our friends, and we really had nothing but positive things to say, but…it seems our opinion really doesn’t reflect the worlds.
Over the weekend, Grindhouse was considered a MASSIVE flop financially, barely making a 10th of it’s budget in it’s opening weekend…and what’s worse, is the studio who produced it is now in panic mode, wanting to split the films perminantly, re-releasing as separate films both in theaters, and on DVD…which means unfortunately, the ‘unique viewing experience’ may never be relieved once ‘Grindhouse’ leaves theaters.
As the weekend approaches, we here at Dead of Summer would like to throw a personal recommendation at you. It’s obvious (as hell, you read us), you like off the wall, kinda shlocky fair.
Do yourself a favor. This weekend, see Grindhouse. Relax, take some friends, and enjoy the ride.
It’s a 3 hour film going experience you’ll never forget.
Back on Monday.
