Comic #2.31 “Salted Meats”

My apologies for the lateness of the comic. Today I discovered that if you get home from a movie at 3am, and then get up for work at 5:30am, you will be sleeping on your keyboard the next evening. haha

But the important thing? The comic is now up and LIVE!~

Few topics to hit for today, so let’s boogie.

  • Spider-Man 3: I’ve had some time to let the movie sit with me, and here’s what I’m feeling. It’s really flawed, but really fun, never the less. The action sequences have never been more frantic, Topher was a great Eddie Brock/Venom, Thomas Haden-Church was actually pretty touching as Sandman, and for a lack of screentime, I loved Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy. As for the returning cast? Shy of James Franco chewing up scenery like a termite, the cast seemed honestly tired of the series. I’ve really enjoyed their work so far, but now I’m ready to see a new cast and crew take on the Spider-Man saga. If Spider-Man 2 was the Empire Strikes Back of the series, Spider-Man 3 is Return of the Jedi…a fun followup that ultimately falls to it shortcomings. I look forward to being able to watch all 3 movies back to back on DVD.
  • Three Panel Soul controversy: I wasn’t sure if I had pimped Three Panel Soul to you readers, but now I shall. Three Panel Soul is the new comic by the creators of MacHall. We’d been rather lucky to cross paths with them at Otakon (serving on the same, god-awful panel), and ever since they started Three Panel Soul, I’ve been hooked. A stark contrast to the cartoony humor of MacHall, Three Panel Soul is dark and cynical…not just in it’s visual style, but in it’s humor. And it’s that humor which caused one of their creators to catch flack in real life. What am I talking about? R Stevens from Diesel Sweeties put it far better than I..read along. I’ve been meaning to post about Three Panel Soul, the new comic by Ian and Matt of MacHall fame- unfortunately I’ve got to do so under less-than-wonderful circumstances. I love this new strip because I’m finding it a lot more minimalist and relatable… also ridiculously funny. Matt was working as a contractor for a branch of the government. He made the mistake of being interested in the hobby of paper target shooting at about the same time as the VA Tech shootings and talking to someone about this hobby at work. Keep in mind he wasn’t even talking about those shootings, in fact he was discussing how he wanted a gun which would make it difficult to kill someone.

He was promptly fired and not allowed back to work because people were scared of him.

To top it all off, he was later visited by police detectives for making a comic about his experience, because it was a “borderline terroristic threat.” (Is “terroristic” even a word? Did they get that from the Colbert report?)

I’m not a lawyer or a reporter or anything, but I would recommend anyone who was one of those things to contact Matt. ( machallboyd AT gmail.com ) If you’re a cartoonist or a webcomics fan, spread his story around. The more people who know about this, the better. He’s a good dude who deserves your support.

Please feel free to spread this post any way you like, including via Digg.

Welp, that’s all for today. Get out and get some Free Comics, and we’ll be back on Monday! Have a great weekend!

“To top it all off, he was later visited by police detectives for making a comic about his experience, because it was a “borderline terroristic threat.” ” AHHHHHH IT’S THE PATRIOT ACT!!!

That is really unfortunate news. I’m sorry to hear that he had to endure that.
I love Three Panel Soul. See what comics can do. There goes art in schools.

  3. Noc Says:

    Two things:

    1) Spider-man 3 was like going to a romantic comedy written by George Lucas with a My Chemical Romance/The Used/Other-bad-emo-bandname-thrown-in-for-good-flavor concert shot in the middle. But the CG was fun, and as much as I hate myself for saying it, I loved Topher Grace as Eddie Brock/Venom.

    2) It is sad that we still live in a day and age where the government is so convoluted that we can be punished because someone walks in on the back-end of a water-cooler conversation, hears the word “gun”, and runs to the nearest idiot with a title and cries about being “terrorized”. I bet this is why they refuse to air old episodes of “Beast Wars” now, cuz they want to shelter their kids from the word “Terror”. Ladies and Gentlemen, the “terrorists” have won, sad to say.

Dude! I love Three Panel Soul!! I’m so happy you do, too.

But alas, that’s some bullhonkey about the alleged terrorism. Although it’s completely absurd, it isn’t surprising in this red-alert culture. I’ll be keeping a good thought for ‘im.
