Wow, talk about an awkward way to start the week.

News just hit the web of the sudden passing of Mike Wieringo, at the age of 44, of a heart attack.

While he was best known for his run on The Flash in the mid-90’s, Wieringo became a personal favorite of mine with his runs on The Sensational Spider-Man and Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.  I’ve long considered his version of Spidey the definitive modern style look, and that comes as some big praise, as I’ve long considered Spider-Man my favorite character.

He was a routine visitor to the Baltimore Comic-Con, considering it to be one of his favorite conventions on the East Coast.  Just earlier this week, in his constantly updated sketch blog, he was commenting on how he was looking forward to Comic Con…and this year, I was going to finally try to commission him for a Spider-Man sketch.

I guess some wishes aren’t to be.

Godspeed Ringo, wherever you are. Thanks for the great art…in an era where so many went for the grim and grit, you reminded me how fun these comic things are supposed to be.  You’ll be missed.
