Why I Love Comics

May 31st, 2008 by Brian

Comics, in any format, are great for a few reasons. Primarily they’re fun, but if Alan Moore has taught us anything, it’s that some stories can only be told via comic books and graphic novels. Heck, even Jack Chick uses the medium to save souls in his own particular batshit insane sort of way. Sometimes comics can also convey a sense of history, of loss, and of such pertinence (MAUS for example) that it’s difficult to argue the place of comics in art.

This brings me to Coco Wang. She’s taken it upon herself to take the personal stories she’s hearing from her home in Beijing and retell them in single page comics. I think it’s important to share this, as it’s current, it’s relevant, and it’s absolutely heart-wrenching. If you are human, and have anything remotely resembling a heart, you WILL fucking cry.
