Space Nazis and Haunted Saunas: Movie Production 2.0

June 2nd, 2008 by Brian

Imagine you’d like to take part in the production of a movie. You aren’t some union film crew employee and you don’t have a lot of time, but you’d like to know you’ve contributed to an idea that’s been put to film. Sound crazy? Well Wreck A Movie thinks it’s a great idea.

It’s a film production collaboration project where you can contribute towards the production of a movie where the creators are seeking help, advice, and feedback from regular people just like you and I. They’ve only got two films up right now, and the whole thing is based in Finland, but there are no borders to the internet that keep you from participating and the community is all in English.

Iron Sky is currently in pre-production, and is a comedy about Germany returning to Earth from a secret moon base they’d fled to at the end of WWII. A teaser was released early May. Check it out here:

Also being developed with help from the Wreck A Movie site is a Finnish horror film called Sauna. Here’s a synopsis for the film:

A cruel horror film bathing in the Finnish sauna culture, in the no-zone between Christianity and paganism.

Year 1595 - the long war is finally over. Brothers Knut and Erik - who are part of the commission marking the border between Finland and Russia - commit a terrible sin as they leave a young girl to die a horrible death. As the commission crosses the uncharted swamp the girl returns to haunt them, her face pouring endless filth. Weary men find solace from the nameless village and find a sauna - The sauna where all sins are washed away. Seeking forgiveness the brothers step in…

Sauna is a horror film about sins and repentance. The story leads us into the core of darkness, where there is no hope, no salvation.

Sauna is currently in post-production, and the first trailer can be found below:

From my perspective, this is a very proactive use of the internet hive-mind for making movies. You tap into a reservoir of skill and knowledge you otherwise wouldn’t have thanks to the internet, and asking for help from regular people is a risk that I seriously hope pays off in the long run for these films. I know they’re on MY radar.

I’m not so sure about Sauna, but I really want to see Iron Sky. How could a movie about space Nazis NOT be good?

Haha - yeah, I signed up to the wreckamovie site after watching the Iron Sky teaser. Looks cool.
